Junk Shopping | Waco, TX

Kat Nelson
Native Wacoan Kat Nelson is a local writer, photographer and avid prospector for vintage treasures and décor ideas among the many shops in the Central Texas area.

Most recently, Ms. Nelson worked at the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce as public relations specialist where she wrote for the GWC Quarterly Magazine, served as assistant to the CEO and provided relocation and attractions information about Waco to new residents and tourists.

Starting in 2005, she worked with the local Heart of Texas Builders Association and soon became a contributing writer for the Waco Tribune Herald/Waco Today magazine. She has penned over 100 feature stories and travel pieces for the Trib’s Waco Today and dwelling magazines and many of the newspaper’s additional lifestyle-related special sections, and provided photography as well.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Texas A&M University and began her career in Dallas writing for a major real estate company.  At age 25, she started her own public relations firm and did extensive promotional work for national homebuilders and real estate firms throughout the D/FW Metroplex. Seven years later, she sold her company upon moving overseas to London with her family.

Returning stateside in 1991, she’s since lived in Atlanta, Georgia, Washington D.C., Potomac, Maryland, then back to Southlake/Grapevine, Texas. In the mid-1990’s, she traded antiques and collectibles, leasing booth space in antique malls in Grapevine and Denton, Texas. She moved back to Waco in 2003.

Much of her professional work as well as personal experiences of putting her homes back together during so many rapid moves have given her a unique and quirky perspective on modern living spaces and lifestyle.

Among her favorite things are red wine, rare steak, blue cheese, olives, sushi, fine chocolates and her two large white rescue dogs. She loves all things Sherlockian, culturally insignificant paranormal/fantasy novels and is a decades-long collector of vintage art, cloisonné, books, jewelry, purses, sculptural items, old cameras and furniture. And also old baskets, though she’s not sure why.

She has created WacoJunque&Funque.com as an online guide to shopping opportunities from area merchants, complete with stories, suggestions, humor and photos.
